Gilgit-Baltistan Authorities Assess Flood Damage, Push for Swift Road Repairs

Gilgit, August 20, 2025 – In the aftermath of recent floods that swept through Gilgit-Baltistan, Governor Syed Mehdi Shah met with Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan on Wednesday to evaluate the ongoing relief and restoration efforts across the region.

The discussion focused on the severe impact of heavy rainfall, particularly on vital transport arteries such as the Naltar Expressway, Babusar Road, and Ghizer Expressway. Officials reviewed both the scale of the damage and the progress of repair operations on these key routes.

Governor Shah highlighted the human and economic toll, noting that several districts had experienced significant losses. He praised the prompt intervention by the Communications Department, which has been working to minimize disruption to travel and local communities.

Federal Minister Aleem Khan, who traveled to Gilgit to personally oversee the recovery work, reassured that the National Highway Authority (NHA) would continue its operations until all damaged highways are fully restored. “Heavy machinery and skilled teams are on site, working around the clock,” he said, stressing that strong coordination between federal and provincial authorities has accelerated repair efforts.

Officials also warned of potential rainfall in the coming hours, keeping teams on high alert to prevent further setbacks. The ongoing collaboration between local and federal agencies is expected to play a critical role in ensuring communities regain normalcy quickly.
