Karachi to Observe Public Holiday Amid Torrential Rains

Karachi will see a temporary pause in daily activities on Wednesday, August 20, as the Sindh government has declared a public holiday in response to heavy rainfall affecting the city. The move comes as authorities work to manage widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions.

Emergency Meeting Held to Tackle Flooding

The decision followed an emergency session led by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, where officials assessed the impact of relentless rains on the metropolis. Reports during the meeting highlighted that the city had recorded an astonishing 245 millimeters of rainfall in just 12 hours, leading to significant urban flooding.

Authorities assured the CM that drainage operations are ongoing and that progress is being made in clearing main roads to restore some mobility. Despite these efforts, officials emphasized that caution is still necessary, particularly in low-lying neighborhoods where water accumulation remains high.

Officials Urge Residents to Stay Safe

CM Murad Ali Shah explained that the holiday is intended to minimize public inconvenience and encourage residents to stay indoors while emergency teams continue their work. “Our teams are actively removing water and addressing blocked drains to ensure safety,” he said.

The emergency meeting included key provincial ministers, including Sharjeel Memon, Nasir Shah, and Saeed Ghani, along with Karachi’s commissioner Zia Lanjar and the city mayor, who collectively reviewed the city’s preparedness and ongoing relief measures.

More Rain Expected

Meteorological authorities have warned that rainfall may continue in the coming hours, prompting city officials to remain on high alert. Residents are advised to monitor updates and exercise caution, especially when traveling through waterlogged areas.
